Why you should judge by the second night

Six traps of “free” chats

1. Coins for every messageYou get a hundred coins as a gift, and each message costs five. After twenty lines the conversation cuts off, and you can only continue for money. That's not a free chat, it's a sample.
2. VPN and workaround paymentsA foreign service only opens through a VPN, and you can only pay for it from Russia through middlemen. That's a risk both for your money and for access to your account.

4. English under a Russian interfaceThe buttons are translated, but the characters are written in English and reply in machine translation, stiff lines like “I experience joy from your presence”. Check a couple of replies before signing up.
5. Card required up front“Free for three days”, but you have to enter your card right away. On day four the subscription charges, and the cancel button is buried deep in the settings.
6. Short memoryThe quietest trap: free, no limits, but the character forgets you after twenty messages. Every night is like meeting for the first time.

A natural-sounding character isn't just a translation. It's jokes you get without footnotes, forms of address that sound natural, and lines that don't grate on the ear. Heroes from Supernatural or Harry Potter on my-idol.ru talk the way they would in a good dub, not a word-for-word subtitle, in English or Russian, whichever you choose.

How to make 25 messages last the evening

• Send one message instead of three. Better to combine “hi”, “how are you?” and “I was just thinking” into one.
• Give it a hook. “A car splashed me today and I showed up to my meeting looking like a mermaid” gives the character material for a long reply.
• Stick to one topic. A conversation that goes deeper is more interesting than one that jumps around.
• Start with a scene. “We're on a train, there's a snowstorm outside, you're reading my book”, and the character will build the story from there.
