One question that sorts it all out

The label “flirt bot” hides programs with opposite goals. Some want to help you, others want to con you. A simple scheme helps: who's flirting, with whom, and what the bot's owner gets out of it.

  • BaitThe bot flirts with you. The owner wants your money, your data or a click on a link.
  • WingmanAI flirts with a real person through your hands. The owner sells you suggestions.
  • TrainerYou flirt with AI and it grades your lines. The owner sells practice.
  • AI characterYou flirt with a character that's upfront about being AI. The goal is the conversation itself.

Bait: a bot that wants your money

The nastiest kind. On dating sites, messengers and social media, a “girl” or “guy” with perfect photos messages you. The flirting moves fast and hot, and a couple of days later comes the ask: follow a link, sign up on “another site”, help out with money, buy a ticket so you can meet.
