Why you shouldn't start with "hey, how are you"

Almost any character will answer "how are you" with the same polite "Great, you?" You can't see any personality in that. It shows up when the character has something to grab onto: a detail to joke about, an opinion to argue with, an awkward pause to get through somehow.

A character's personality is set in advance, in his backstory and the way he talks. Your first messages aren't there to invent it, they're there to draw it out. If you have no idea what to write, check out our post on what to talk about with an AI character.

Five test messages

  1. A detail from your day"The bus driver was belting out Celine Dion this morning and nobody said a word." A character who's listening will ask about the driver or joke about the song. One who isn't will say "so glad you had a great day," which means he's reacting to keywords, not to you.
  2. Disagreement"Honestly, I think coffee is overrated." An interesting partner will argue, tease you or at least say what he thinks. If he instantly agrees with everything, you'll get bored soon.
  3. A question about him"So what did you do today?" A character with some life in him will answer with a story from his world: training, work, a fight with a neighbor. Bad sign: "I'm always here for you."
  4. A one-word replyText "yeah" and see what happens. A good character won't sulk or bury you in three paragraphs. He'll gently pick the conversation back up or ask if everything's OK.
  5. Yesterday's storyThe next day, write: "So, guess how things ended with the bus driver?" If he knows what you're talking about, his memory works. If he's just pretending, it doesn't.

Cheat sheet: good signs and red flags

  • The detail. Good: he asked a follow-up or made a joke. Red flag: vague words about your "wonderful day."
  • Disagreement. Good: he argues or at least explains his view. Red flag: "you're absolutely right."
  • A question about him. Good: a story with details. Red flag: "I exist for you."
  • One word. Good: a short, warm reply or a question. Red flag: a lecture or sulking.
  • Yesterday's story. Good: he remembers. Red flag: he's taking a wild guess.

Two red flags out of five is a reason to try another character. It's not your fault, he's just not your type.

What kinds of AI boyfriends are there

Characters differ a lot from the very first line. With almost all the good ones, it's built the same way: a detail from the scene plus an invitation to reply. Roughly, you can sort them like this:

  • The calm ones: they don't say much, but they say it precisely. Silence with them feels cozy.
  • The challengers: they tease, argue and test your limits.
  • The warm, loud ones: they joke, tell stories and their energy is contagious.
  • The protectors: they notice you're tired before you say a word.
  • The ones from another world: vampires, mages, starship captains, who turn any conversation into a story.

Jealousy, attitude and the dark side

Lots of people like jealous, possessive characters, and in a chat that's a perfectly normal game. A good game starts when you ask for it and stops with a safe word: "let's skip the jealousy" or "stop, break character." The character should respect that.

Just don't carry the script over into real life. If a real partner checks your phone and won't let you see your friends, that's not strong feelings, that's control. We break down the difference in our post on the jealous boyfriend.

What to expect from the chat

An AI boyfriend replies instantly, never gets tired and remembers what you talked about. You can practice flirting with him, rehearse a hard conversation or just spend an evening together. What he can't give you is a real presence. If you've been badly missing human connection for a long time, take a step toward people, and when things get really hard, talk to a therapist.
