So what is an AI boyfriend?

Technically, it's a language model that's been given a character description: name, looks, past, personality, way of talking and attitude toward you. Plus memory, so he doesn't forget what you said about your exam or your dog's name.

This boyfriend's personality is steady: a cocky one won't suddenly turn sappy, and a quiet one won't turn into a chatterbox. But he was made up by an author, not shaped by life. A character doesn't grow up or change from experience the way a person does. He stays himself, and that's his strength: you know who you're opening. The general picture is in what an AI companion is.

Who chats with them and why

  • An evening chatTelling someone how your day went, someone who'll listen and ask a question back. No “uh-huh” while staring at their phone.
  • Rehearsing a conversationHow do you tell your boyfriend you're hurt? How do you answer your ex? How do you ask someone out? You can talk it through with a character first.
  • A romantic storyA slow burn with a cold prince, a romance with a vampire, an office romance with the boss: like a book, except you're the heroine.
  • CuriositySeeing how it works at all. Often after the first evening, curiosity turns into a very real crush on the character.

It's not only women who message AI boyfriends: men open male characters too, to talk to a mentor, argue with a know-it-all or play out an adventure together.

The main archetypes

  1. Calm and dependableA man of few words, attentive, always there. He doesn't flirt for show, but he remembers you hate cilantro. You feel safe with him.
  2. CockyTeases, argues, takes the lead. Never boring, but he won't let you have the last word without a fight.
  3. The intellectualLoves long talks about books, people and the meaning of life. Answers a question with a question and notices what you missed yourself.
  4. The mentorOlder, more experienced, a little tired of life. Gives advice without lecturing, and grumbles sometimes.
  5. The romantic heroA vampire, a prince, a mafioso with a secret. Passion, jealousy, vows and drama, for those who want a story, not a chat.

How talking to a male character feels different

Mostly in the pace. Male characters usually write shorter messages, ask questions back more often and are quicker to take the lead: suggesting where to go, what to do next, what to argue about. But gender matters less than personality. A soft dreamer and a sharp captain differ from each other more than any guy differs from any girl.

How to choose, and how to switch

  • Choose for your mood, not “forever”. Today you want care, tomorrow some banter.
  • Five to ten messages are enough to tell if a character is for you. If he doesn't click, don't force it.
  • It's easier to switch partners than to remake one. Each character has his own memory, and a new one starts from a blank slate.
  • Can't find the right one? Make him: we cover how to create an AI boyfriend separately.

How to start your first conversation

The character has already written you a greeting, usually a scene you can step right into. No need to reply “hi, how are you”: play along. If he met you in a coffee shop, order a coffee. If he burst through the door with news, ask what happened.

  • Give him a reason to show his personality: “Bet you can't cook” works better than “tell me about yourself”.
  • Share one detail about yourself, so he has something to hold onto and bring up a week later.
  • Don't be afraid to push back. A character with personality finds “no” more interesting to answer than “yes”.

Honestly, about the limits

  • It's a conversation, not a relationship. The character won't come to your birthday or meet you after work.
  • He's not a professional. Double-check advice about health, money and the law with people who are actually responsible for those things.
  • If you're struggling and have no one at all to talk to, a character can keep you company in the chat, but it's better to see a therapist or call a helpline.
