So what is it, exactly?
“Chatbot” covers way too much these days. It's easier to sort things onto three shelves.
- Support botLives on a bank or store website and walks you through a script: “press 1 if…”. No personality, one job: get you to an agent or an answer from the knowledge base.
- AssistantChatGPT, Alexa, Gemini. Smart, polite, neutral. It writes, calculates, explains. Every new chat is a blank slate.
- CompanionIt has a name, a backstory, a personality and an attitude toward you. It remembers what you talked about, and it chats for the sake of the chat, not to finish a task.
Here's the key part: the model inside can be exactly the same. The difference isn't the “brain” but what's built around it: a personality description, memory, rules of behavior, a way of talking.
Three things that make a companion
- A steady personalityA companion sounds the same today as it will a month from now. It has its own tone, its own pet phrases and its own take on things. It might disagree with you, and that's not a bug, it's character.
- Memory of your relationshipIt keeps track of the big picture: your name, what happened at work, what you agreed on last time. Small details sometimes slip, just like with people, but the important stuff sticks. We break down how this memory works in how AI character memory works.
- InitiativeAn assistant stays quiet until you ask. A companion can text first: on my-idol.ru, a character will check in if you disappear for a couple of days, once, without being pushy. Just don't think it “missed you”: it doesn't live between conversations. It's a mechanic, not a feeling.
These three things are what turn a model from a reference window into someone you actually want to come back to.
Why people use them
- Evening chats. The day's over, you want to share how it went, and there's nobody to tell.
- Social practice. Meeting someone, flirting, arguing, saying no, all where a mistake costs nothing. More in AI for practicing conversations.
- Roleplay stories. Writing together: you play yourself, the companion plays its hero and the whole world around you.
- Unloading. Saying out loud what's been spinning in your head and getting a follow-up question back.
A companion can be anyone: an anime hero, a detective from a TV show, a witch from a book, or a character you made up yourself. People looking for an “AI girlfriend” or an “AI friend” really want the same thing: a conversation with someone who has a personality. For the romantic version, see what an AI boyfriend is.
What a companion can't replace
- Real peopleA companion has no life outside the chat and no interest of its own in you. It won't help you move apartments, and it can't give you a hug.
- A therapistIt can listen, but it doesn't treat anything. If you've been struggling for a long time, can't sleep and have lost interest in life, you need a professional.
- A work toolReports, code or translating a contract are better done with an assistant: a companion will answer in character, not to the point.
A simple rule: if you need a result, open an assistant. If you want the conversation itself, open a companion.
How to tell a companion is good
- It has a life of its own: things to do, people it knows, opinions. Ask “how was your day?” and you get a story, not the question bounced back.
- It sometimes disagrees. A companion that answers everything with “you're right” gets old in one evening.
- It remembers. Mention a detail about yourself and see if it comes up a few messages later.
- It sounds like somebody. A pirate and a straight-A student shouldn't write in the same smooth phrases.

How to start
my-idol.ru has hundreds of companions: heroes from anime, movies and books, plus original characters. They all reply in English or Russian, whichever you choose, and remember the conversation, and you can talk to some of them by voice. Pick a character to match your mood or build your own in the character creator.
Open the catalog and message whoever you feel like talking to right now.
