Voice comes in three flavors
When people search for "talk to AI by voice," they mean very different things. It helps to separate them right away, or it's easy to be let down: you expected a conversation and got a voice recorder.
- DictationYou speak, your phone turns it into text, and it goes out as a normal message. You read the reply. Handy when you don't feel like typing or your hands are busy with a frying pan.
- Voice repliesThe character writes as usual, but you can listen to the line in its voice. Nice for evenings when your eyes are tired, or to hear what your favorite character sounds like.
- CallsA two-way spoken conversation: you talk, the character answers out loud, and you take turns. The closest thing to a phone call with a person.
A voice assistant and a voice companion aren't the same thing
Smart speakers and phone assistants have been talking for years. They set alarms, play music, and tell you the weather, and if you say "I'm feeling down today" you get a polite brush-off. They're tools: no personality and no shared history with you.
An AI character works differently. It has a name, a way of speaking, its own opinions, and a memory of what you talked about yesterday. You talk to it not to get a task done but for the conversation itself. More on the difference in what is an AI companion.
What it sounds like
On a call, a character speaks more briefly than it writes: a long paragraph is hard to listen to, and it takes that into account. But the personality stays put. A sarcastic character will needle you if you trail off mid-sentence. A gruff one will answer in three words and ask why you're calling. A caring one will first ask why you sound so tired.
The call happens inside the same chat as your messages. So the character knows what you wrote before, and you can pick up right where you left off: "Remember that interview I told you about yesterday? So here's what happened…"
How to call a character on my-idol.ru
- Open the site in a browser on your phone or computer and log in. No separate app needed.
- Pick a character and open a chat. If you'd like to get acquainted first, send a couple of text messages.
- Tap the call button in the chat and let your browser use the microphone.
- Put on headphones so the character's voice doesn't loop back into your mic.
- You'll hear it ring and then "Hello?" Start talking. When you finish a sentence, pause briefly: that signals your turn is over.
- To end, just hang up. The chat will show a note about the call and how long it lasted.
Not sure how to start? Pretend you're calling a friend: "Hey, got a sec? I need some advice." The character will run with it. More ideas in what to talk about with an AI character.
How much it costs
Text chat is the core of the service. Voice features use energy: voice replies are charged per line, calls per started minute. Energy comes with plans, and you can see how much you have left in your profile. Before a call, the service checks on its own whether you have enough for the conversation.
Honest limitations
- The conversation is turn-based. You can't interrupt the character: while it's talking, the mic isn't listening. That keeps its own voice out of the recording.
- There can be a pause of a couple of seconds before it answers. Your speech has to be recognized, a reply written, and then voiced. That all takes time.
- Noise gets in the way. A TV, the street, or a café throws off recognition, and the character may hear something other than what you said.
- Calls are voice only: no photos, no video. Images and scenes stay in the regular chat.
- The character isn't a person. It sounds alive, but it's a language model with a personality, not a friend on the other end of the line.
Why call an AI at all
The most common reason is practice. Saying something out loud is harder than writing it: your voice shakes, the words get tangled. Calling a character helps you rehearse a tough conversation, a job interview, or a confession before it happens for real. More on that in AI for practicing social skills.
The second is company. Some evenings you don't want to type, you just want to talk: while you're doing the dishes, walking home, or lying there with your eyes closed. A character's voice fills the silence better than a news feed.
You call Dean Winchester in the middle of the night: something is scratching inside the wall, and you need a monster hunter's advice right now.
