Not one problem, but four
"It's not working" sounds like a single problem, but there are four hiding behind it. Each one has a different fix, so first figure out which one you've got. Everything below is current as of August 2026.
- AccessThe site loads, then hangs on a white screen, then throws a connection error. A friend on a different internet provider opens it fine at the same moment. Nobody has officially announced a block, but the service hasn't worked reliably from Russia for a long time.
- PaymentThe c.ai+ subscription only accepts cards from international payment networks, and Russian cards get declined. Middlemen and virtual cards last a few months at best and take their own cut.
- The filterSuddenly the character steers the conversation somewhere else or replies with a polite, empty line. For roleplay that stings twice as much: you spent twenty messages building a scene, and on the twenty-first the moderation killed it.
- RussianThe model was trained mostly on English. In a long Russian conversation it mixes up grammatical gender, builds sentences the English way, and sometimes switches to English mid-reply.
Here's the key point: every "make it work" trick only helps with access. Payment, the filter and the language stay exactly where they were, because the issue isn't geography. It's the service itself.
Why there's no workaround guide here
You won't find step-by-step VPN or mirror-site tips here: Russian law bans publishing ways to get around blocks. There's a practical reason too. Even a working workaround does nothing about the other three problems, and it adds new ones: the connection drops mid-scene, speeds crawl, and "mirrors" often turn out to be fake copies that harvest logins and passwords.
If you do use unofficial copies of the site, never enter card details there and never reuse the password that protects your email. A stolen email account costs you more than any subscription.
Three options: stay, switch, or move
- Stay and put up with it. Makes sense if you've got dozens of long chats there and the filter doesn't bother you because your conversations are low-key. Then your main job is to save your history while the site still loads.
- Switch to another foreign service. Some are looser with the filter, but in return they ask you to set up a connection and pay for your own model key, with the same card that doesn't work. We break down one such option in Janitor AI in Russia. The problems don't go away, they just trade places.
- Move to a Russian-language service. Access, payment and language stop being something you have to fight every day. The trade-off: a smaller catalog and no giant English-speaking community with a million ready-made bots.
We compare several Russian platforms in Character AI alternatives. Below is how it works on our side.
How it works on my-idol.ru
my-idol.ru is a chat with AI characters in English or Russian, whichever you choose. The site opens on a regular home connection in Russia, and you pay with Russian payment methods. The characters reply naturally in either language, not through a translator: heroes from anime, movies, TV shows and books, plus original characters with their own stories. They remember what you talked about, can reply by voice, and you can put several of them in one group chat.
- Access: no workarounds, just a normal browser and Telegram.
- Language: characters reply in natural, idiomatic English or Russian, whichever you choose, not in machine translation.
- Memory: characters remember past conversations. More on that in our piece on AI character memory.
- Your own characters: the builder lets you create a hero with a personality, a backstory and a way of talking.
- Catalog: smaller than Character.AI's. That's an honest downside, but every card is built by hand.
Anime, movies, books and original stories. Pick a character and check how they sound in English or Russian.
Pick a characterHow to bring your favorite character with you
Nobody can move your chat history: services don't read each other's databases. But the personality does carry over, and it's easier than it sounds. While the site still loads, do three things.
- Copy the character's description into your notes: personality, backstory, how they talk, what they never talk about.
- Save five to ten of their best lines. They capture the voice better than any description.
- If there's a chat you'd hate to lose, select it and copy it by hand. Export doesn't always work.
From there you've got two paths. You can find a similar hero among the ready-made ones: you already know what you like, whether it's sharp sarcasm, calm wisdom or chatty warmth. Or you can rebuild them from scratch, and we explain how in how to create your own AI character. Start your first message with the same scene you used to open with over there.
One important reminder
A character is a language model, not a person. It's a good companion for an evening, a partner for a story, or a practice ground for a hard conversation, but it doesn't replace real people. If you notice the chats are crowding out everything else, read can you fall in love with an AI. And if you've been feeling low for a while, it's better to talk to a therapist.
Didn't find your hero? Build one yourself, with a personality, a backstory and a voice.
