Scope of this piece: it's not a collection of phrases to talk Alice into breaking her rules. Only what's in the official help pages as of August 2026, and an honest comparison.

What's new in Alice

A character in Alice AI is a separate conversation partner with its own personality, way of speaking and chat memory. The catalog has a few dozen ready-made ones: types inspired by bloggers and anime, someone to vent to, someone for tough-love motivation. You can build your own: name, description, greeting, motto, chat style. The more detailed the description, the more accurate the result.

It works in the Alice AI chat on the website, in the apps and in Yandex Browser. Alice herself doesn't go anywhere: the assistant still handles tasks, while the characters are there for conversation.

For a user in Russia, that's half the value: there's nothing to set up. The service loads on regular internet, the basics are free, and Russian is the model's native language. Everything people spent years chasing on Western platforms just works here.

Where the product ends

  • Text onlyYou can't talk to a character by voice. It won't send you a picture or look at yours, read a file or go online. Everything happens in writing.
  • One character per chatYou can't bring two characters into one conversation: each one lives in its own chat.
  • Two weeks of historyOn the free plan, chats are kept for 14 days; keeping them indefinitely takes an Alice Plus subscription. For an evening chat it doesn't matter. For a story spanning months, it matters a lot.
  • Description moderationProfanity, violence and insults won't pass in your own character's description. A personality like "a rude cynic who cuts straight to the truth" will have to be phrased much more softly.
  • Filter with no adult modeSettings offer three modes: moderate by default, family and kids. There's nothing looser than the default, and there's no age verification.

Why this isn't an oversight

It's tempting to read the list above as "they haven't gotten to it yet, it's coming soon." It isn't, and it's better to understand that before you start waiting.

Alice AI is a general-purpose assistant. It lives in apps from the Apple and Google stores, in the browser, in smart speakers and cars. Next to the characters sit a kids' mode and homework help, and around it all is an ad ecosystem that needs a brand-safe platform. A product with that audience can't afford conversations that require age verification. Character.AI hit the same wall back in the day. Details in Character.AI not working.

So Alice's characters are a great way into the topic, and for a first taste of the format they beat almost everything on the market. The format just has a ceiling, and you'll hit it once you want to live through a scene rather than just chat.

Three options for what to do next

  1. Stay with Alice. If you need to vent in the evening, practice a language, talk through a work situation or get a kick in the pants, Alice will handle it for free in an app you already have.
  2. Build your own on an API. Technically possible, but in practice it's a hobby of its own: a key, foreign payment, an interface, chat storage.
  3. Use a service built for talking to characters. It'll have what a general assistant won't get by design: voice, images, long-term memory, several characters in one scene. The trade-off is that some features cost money.

How it works on my-idol.ru

my-idol.ru is a service for talking to AI characters in English or Russian (you pick the language). It loads in the browser on regular internet, takes Russian bank cards, and you can start for free. Here's what it adds to Alice:

  • Voice: a character can reply with a voice message, and you can even call them.
  • Images right in the chat.
  • Group chats: Harry, Hermione and Draco in one conversation, each arguing true to character. Exactly what Alice doesn't have.
  • Memory with no two-week cutoff: the character remembers what you talked about. More in AI character memory.
  • Characters from anime, movies, TV shows and books, plus originals, for every kind of conversation.
  • A builder: your own character's looks, personality and way of speaking.
Set up a scene with several characters

Choose two to seven characters, define how they feel about each other and start a shared story.

Create a group chat

To be fair both ways: on price and having an app, Alice comes out ahead. If text and one conversation partner are enough for you, the question is settled in her favor.

How to move your character over from Alice

Nobody can transfer your chat history: no service reads another's database. But the description moves over in five minutes.

  1. Open your character's card in Alice and copy everything you wrote into a note: personality, way of speaking, habits, off-limits topics.
  2. Separately save three or four of their best lines. They set the tone more precisely than any description.
  3. Find a similar character in the catalog or build your own in the builder from that note. For how to phrase the setup, see ready-made relationship prompts.

Bring your character's description into the builder: looks, personality and voice.
