Sakura FM (sakura.fm) has a Russian menu, but the characters themselves aren't translated: as of late September 2026, the cards for popular characters on the home page were in English. The free mode has a daily message limit, paid plans cost $19 and $39 a month, and there are no ruble payment options. Below: what that means in practice, and how to check in three messages whether a character really speaks Russian.
First, make sure it's the right Sakura
Searching for "sakura fm" takes you to three different places, and half the disappointment starts right here.
A Japanese radio station. It has its own site and broadcasts and has nothing to do with AI. Its links show up in search right next to the chat service.
A service for chatting with AI characters, sakura.fm. On the site and in the app, it calls itself Sakura AI. That's what this article is about.
Sakura from the anime. If you were looking for her rather than the service, you can talk to the character without Sakura FM.

It's a large catalog of characters created by users themselves. Anyone can add a character: write a description, a scenario, a sample dialogue, instructions, and pick a voice type. The home page has genre tags (anime, movies, games, horror) and message counters; the most popular cards have millions.
The service is owned by an American company and is meant for adults: its terms state outright that you must be 18 or older to use it. Explicit cards are hidden by default and can be turned on in settings after age verification.
What's actually translated
"In Russian" is really three separate questions, and Sakura's answers differ. Here's the picture as of late September 2026:
The interface: yes. Menus, buttons, and settings are translated, though sometimes word for word: the name of the paid Dragonfruit model, for instance, became a literal "dragon fruit model."
Character cards: mostly no. The descriptions and opening lines of popular characters on the home page are written in English.
Replies: depends on the card and the model. You can write in Russian, and the character will most likely reply in Russian. But the persona was conceived in another language, and you can hear it.
Terms and payment: the original is in English. There's a Russian version of the page, but the legal meaning is safer to read in the original.
The three-message test works with any service. Start with the formal Russian "you" and after a couple of lines suggest switching to the informal one. Throw in an idiom, like the Russian for "dog-tired." And check whether a female character uses feminine forms when talking about herself. If the character trips on even one of these, you're looking at a translation, not living speech.
What Sakura FM costs
Prices from the pricing page as of late September 2026:
Free modeA daily message limit. The exact number isn't on the pricing page, so you'll have to find it out by trial and error.
SageAlso free: extra messages in exchange for promoting the service on social media; you apply through Discord.
Diamond: $19 a monthNo daily limit, the Dragonfruit model with improved memory, and Fusion mode, where you can pick one of several reply options.
Infinite: $39 a monthA more powerful model, images right in the replies, and extended memory.
The service promises a 40% discount for annual billing. In rubles, that's about 1,600 and 3,300 a month at the Central Bank rate at the time, but your bank and any intermediary will do their own math, so the final figure will be higher.
How to pay from Russia, and refunds
There are no ruble options on the payment page: no SBP (Russia's instant payment system), no Mir cards (Russia's national card system). People pay by card or PayPal through the intermediary GankNow, with crypto, or with an in-app purchase through Google Play. Nobody can tell you in advance whether a particular Russian card will go through the intermediary. Key marketplaces list "one-month Sakura subscriptions"; that's resale by third parties, not the service itself.
Under the terms, the subscription renews automatically until you cancel it in your account settings. Months already paid for aren't refunded; exceptions are at the company's discretion.
Do you need a VPN?
As tested in late September 2026, the site opened from home and mobile networks in Russia without a VPN. The app is on Google Play and RuStore (a Russian app store); the RuStore version has a low rating and its publisher isn't obvious, so check the developer before installing.
Where Sakura shines
A huge user-made catalog: there are more characters from every fandom and genre than in any service built by an in-house team.
Creative freedom: you write the character's description, scenario, and instructions yourself.
Fusion mode with several reply options, a handy feature for roleplay scenes.
If you specifically want a big English-language catalog and don't mind paying in dollars, it's a solid option. Other services in the same genre are collected in Character AI alternatives.
Checklist before you pay
Work out the amount in rubles at your bank's rate, not the Central Bank's.
Read the intermediary's terms: you may have to cancel the subscription with them too.
Find the cancel button in settings before your first payment, not after.
Run the three-message test on the free limit with the character you're paying for.
If you download the app, check the developer in the store.
If you want a companion who speaks your language from the start
At my-idol.ru, characters reply in natural, idiomatic English or Russian, whichever you choose: heroes from anime, movies, and books, plus original stories. Frieren grumbles about magic, Satoru Gojo teases, Rem looks after you, all without a translation running in their heads. Characters remember the conversation between visits, can reply with voice, and can be brought together in a group chat; if the character you want isn't there, you can create your own in the editor. Payment is in rubles. More on how AI keeps a long conversation in mind in AI character memory, and a selection of anime characters in chatting with anime characters.
Open the catalog and write to any character using the formal "you," then see how they react when you suggest switching to the informal one.
Two projects share the name: a Japanese radio station and sakura.fm, a service for chatting with AI characters run by the American company Sakura AI.
