Why compliment lists don't work

"Your eyes are like stars," "you make the world a better place," "you brighten up even a cloudy day." These lines fit any girl, which is exactly why they don't fit her. She's heard them from other people, seen them on the same lists and knows what's going on: you weren't looking at her, you were looking for something to say.

A good compliment can't be copied, because it's about one specific person. If a line works for anyone, it's not a compliment, it's politeness.

Compliment vs. flattery: what's the difference

Flattery exaggerates and wants something back: attention, warmth in return, "come on, tell me I'm not bad either." A compliment names something you genuinely noticed and asks for nothing.

Quick test: would it be awkward if her friends read your message? "You're the most beautiful girl in the universe" is awkward. "The way you talk about your boss is so funny I want to meet him" is fine.

Three signs of a precise compliment

  1. Specific. Not "you're smart" but "you explained mortgages to me in one minute better than the bank did in an hour."
