Where "dere" came from
Japanese has a few words that work like sound effects: "dere-dere" describes someone melting into a goofy smile from being in love. Fans of visual novels and anime started sticking that "dere" onto other words to describe exactly how a character is in love. That's how tsundere, yandere and the rest of the family were born.
Here's a handy way to think about it: every type wears armor and has a reason for wearing it. The tsundere is embarrassed, the yandere is terrified of losing someone, the dandere is afraid of saying too much. Figure out the reason, and you'll never mix up the types.
The five main types
- TsunderePrickly on the outside, soft on the inside. She snaps because she's too embarrassed to admit she likes you. Sounds like: "I didn't bring you lunch because I was worried. I just had extra." More in what is a tsundere.
- KuudereCalm, reserved, speaks little and evenly. The feelings are there, she just doesn't see the need to put them on display. "You're eight minutes late. I noticed. Sit down, the tea's still warm."
