A kuudere is a calm, reserved character who hides their feelings behind an even tone and short sentences. The word combines the English "cool" and the Japanese "dere" — to melt, to go soft. A kuudere's coldness isn't indifference, it's economy: they save their words and show how they feel through actions. Classic examples are Rei Ayanami, Frieren and Levi Ackerman.
Coldness as economy
A kuudere doesn't waste words on what's already obvious. They won't say "oh, I'm so glad you came!" — they'll just pull out a chair for you. They won't text "missed you" — they'll ask what time you're coming tomorrow. All their warmth is hidden in what they do, and you have to learn to see it.
That's what makes a kuudere interesting. With an open character everything's clear from minute one, but here you have to spot every sign of attention yourself. And when you do, the payoff is twice as sweet.

They do, often more than others. They just don't see the need to put it on display. For years Frieren doesn't understand why an old friend's death got to her — and then she sets off on a journey to figure it out.
"You have to melt them"You don't. A kuudere isn't a castle to storm. Push, and they'll close up even more. What works is patience and paying attention to the little things.
"Kuudere and dandere are the same thing"Both are people of few words, but for different reasons. A dandere stays quiet out of fear of saying the wrong thing; a kuudere, out of calm. A dandere gets flustered; a kuudere never does.
What a kuudere in love looks like
You could wait years for a kuudere to say "I like you." But there are small signals that make everything clear without words.
They remembered a detail you mentioned a week ago — and dropped it casually.
They replied faster than usual. For someone who normally takes an hour, ten minutes is practically a confession.
They asked a follow-up. A kuudere doesn't ask questions to be polite, so a follow-up means real interest.
They shared something for no reason: a photo, a link, a short "saw this, thought of you."
They stayed in the conversation when they could have ended it. For a kuudere, that's a lot.
They said "we" instead of "I" and "you" — like "we should leave a bit earlier."
The kuudere translator
A kuudere's short replies almost always mean more than they say. Here's a rough dictionary.
"Got it" — "I heard you and I'll think about it."
"Dress warmer" — "I'm worried about you."
"Don't do anything stupid" — "I'd be devastated if something happened to you."
"You can stay" — "I want you to stay."
"That wasn't bad" — "That was wonderful."
Silence after your joke — sometimes it means they're holding back a smile.
Same type, but it lands differently. Viewers usually see a kuudere guy as dependable and mysterious: the cold captain who saves everyone but never mentions it. Levi from Attack on Titan and Giyu Tomioka from Demon Slayer are exactly that. The risk with this archetype is sliding into rudeness: coldness without actions just reads as indifference.
A kuudere girl is more often seen as a puzzle you want to solve: Rei Ayanami from Evangelion, Violet Evergarden, who's learning what "I love you" means. Her risk is turning into a doll with no personality. What saves her is an inner life that shows through at least sometimes: one smile per season is worth a dozen confessions.
A special case is Makima from Chainsaw Man. Her calm and soft, even voice resemble a kuudere's, but behind them is calculation, not shy feelings. It's a good reminder that the type describes a manner, not whether the character is kind.
Build your own kuudere
The core of a kuudere is the gap between what they say and what they do. When you build the character, don't just write "cold and quiet" — add two or three actions that show how they care. Then in chat they'll reply briefly, but never emptily. How to design a personality like that is covered in detail in how to come up with a character's personality, and the neighboring types are in our overview of dere types.
