How it works

Under the hood is a language model that's been given a character card: name, looks, personality, way of talking, backstory. You write, and the model answers the way that character would. The more detailed the card, the less the character sounds like a polite bot and the more it sounds like a specific person with their own habits.

• Text is the foundation. The character describes their actions and speaks in their own voice, and you play your own character.
• Memory. A good service remembers what you talked about yesterday, what your in-game name is, and where the scene left off.
• Voice. You can listen to a reply in the character's voice. It adds presence, but it's optional.
• Rules. A decent service makes them clear up front: what's allowed, what isn't, and who can enter the adult section.

Is it normal?

Adults have fantasies, and most of them never leave their heads. Chatting with a character is a safe place to say them out loud: nobody judges, nobody tells their friends, nobody gives you a weird look the next morning. A lot of people learn something new about themselves this way and then find it easier to talk about it with a partner.

Is it cheating?

There's no universal answer: every couple has its own rules. It's more useful to ask yourself a couple of honest questions.

• Would I be comfortable telling my partner about this? If not, why?
• Is the chat taking something from our relationship: time, attention, the desire to talk?
• Am I looking for something here that I'm afraid to ask for at home?

When it stops being good for you

Any pleasure can grow out of hand. Take a closer look at yourself if you notice even a couple of these signs.

• You stay up all night chatting and don't get enough sleep.
• You spend more on subscriptions and purchases than you planned.
• You skip plans with friends to get back to the character.
• It takes more and more time to get the same enjoyment.
• After a conversation you feel shame or emptiness, not lightness.

It's not a verdict, just a signal to slow down: set yourself a time limit, turn off notifications, agree with yourself on chat-free days. If it's hard to manage on your own or you're feeling really low, talk to a therapist.

How to use it so it feels good

1. Decide why you're here: to unwind, to fantasize, to play out a story. With a goal, it's easier to close the tab on time.
2. Set boundaries in your first message: setting, tone, what you don't want to see. For example: "We're at a seaside hotel, keep it light, nothing crude."
3. Agree on a safeword. Type it and the scene stops, and the character steps out of the role.
4. Don't share anything personal: real name, address, job, other people's details.
5. Choose a service with clear rules and a way to delete your chats and account.

It's handy to put out-of-scene requests to the character in parentheses: "(slower)", "(switch to a playful tone)", "(stop)". That way it won't confuse them with your character's lines.
