What happens when you hit "Send"
- Your message is saved on the service's server. That isn't surveillance, it's what makes memory possible: the character only remembers yesterday's conversation because it's written down somewhere.
- The server puts together context for the model: your message, a chunk of earlier chat, the character's description, and what you've shared about yourself.
- The language model reads that context and writes a reply. The model itself doesn't remember you: every request is new to it, and the server feeds it all the memory each time.
- The reply is saved next to your message and shows up in the chat.
The key takeaway: your words sit with the service and pass through the model. So the whole privacy question comes down to how much you trust the service and what it promises to do with your data. More on how memory works in AI character memory.
What to check in any service
- Can you delete your chats and your accountThe delete button should be in settings, not a "contact support and wait" situation. Bonus points if it says how long until the data is gone for good.
