What Is a Husbando: Meaning and 6 Types of Beloved Heroes

Where the word came from

"Waifu" came first. In the anime Azumanga Daioh, the teacher Kimura shows a photo of his wife and says "my wife" in English with a Japanese accent. The English subtitles rendered it as "mai waifu," and the phrase became a meme: fans started calling their favorite heroines that. The male counterpart was born the same way: "husband" with a Japanese-style ending turned into "husbando."

One important detail: nobody in Japan actually says this. English-speaking fans coined the word, and fandoms elsewhere, including in Russia, simply borrowed it. That's why there are several spellings floating around, with no single standard.

Fans fall for the crack, not the armor

Look closely at the most popular husbandos, and they all share one trait. On the outside: strength, coldness or swagger. Then in some scene the armor cracks, and you see something vulnerable underneath. Japanese fandom calls this gap moe: the melt-your-heart feeling that comes from contrast.

• Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop is a laid-back bounty hunter who just can't let go of his past.
• Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin is the kindest wanderer with a reverse-blade sword, and in his past, the most feared killer of his era.

Strength without a crack is boring, and a crack without strength doesn't give you chills. A husbando needs both.

Six types of husbando

1. The cold commanderFew words, strict, demands everyone's best. Shows he cares through actions: silently slides you a cup of tea or covers you in battle.
2. The arrogant "ore-sama"Sure he's the best and says so out loud. Charming in his nerve, until it turns out he'd do anything for his people.
3. The sunshine boyLoud, cheerful, always hungry. Easy to be around, and his stubborn faith in people is contagious. Naruto is the genre classic.
4. The mentorOlder, calmer, knows the answer before you've asked. Around him, you want to grow and be noticed.
5. The dangerous oneA dark past, blood on his hands and a softness only you get to see. The biggest crack of them all.
6. The quiet intellectualGlasses, books, dry humor. Wins you over by listening and remembering every little thing you said.

Why people pick a husbando at all

A favorite character has things that are often missing in real life. He notices little things. His strength isn't aimed at you but used to protect you. He's predictable where it counts: he won't vanish without explanation or say something hurtful just to test your reaction. It's a safe kind of attachment, and there's nothing weird about it.

Whole genres have grown out of this, like otome games, where the heroine chooses which hero to romance. Their audience stopped being niche a long time ago.

Don't search by looks: there are thousands of handsome heroes, but only one gets you. Think of the scene that made your heart skip. What happened in it? The cold hero smiled for the first time?
