Why scenes fizzle out

A typical opening goes like this: "I'm a warrior from the northern kingdom, heading to the capital to find an artifact. You're an elf who meets me in the forest." It's all clear, and there's nothing to answer. The character can only say "Greetings, traveler" and wait to see what happens next.

A good hook works the other way around. Something has already happened but hasn't been explained: the campfire is in the wrong place, nobody opens the door, there's a pattern on the window you saw in a dream. The character grabs that strangeness, and the scene gets moving. We break down the formula in detail in how to start roleplaying with AI.

The forest and what lies beyond it

  1. A trail that wasn't thereYou're following an old map and suddenly realize the trail is leading somewhere else. Someone is standing between the trees, not bothering to hide. "Have you been following me long? Or am I following you?"
  2. A campfire in the wrong placeYou light a fire in a clearing, and every bird around goes silent at once. A forest guardian steps out of the dark, looking not at the fire but at your hands.
