Anime has two different ways of sorting shows onto shelves. Demographics (shonen, shojo, seinen, josei) tell you which magazine audience a story was made for. Genre (action, romance, isekai, mystery) tells you what it's about. That's why Attack on Titan is both shonen and dark fantasy, and Frieren is both shonen and an unhurried drama. Below is a guide to both, with examples.
Demographics are a newsstand shelf, not a genre
Most anime grows out of manga, and in Japan manga runs in magazines aimed at a specific audience. That's where the split comes from. It hints at a story's tone and pace but says nothing about the plot: a shonen can be about sports, horror or cooking.
ShonenFor teenage boys. Friendship, growth, training, an enemy stronger than you. Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, One Piece, Frieren.
Fights, techniques, tournaments. It's all about pace and stakes. Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen.
FantasyMagic, swords, another world with its own rules. Frieren, Delicious in Dungeon.
IsekaiThe hero ends up in another world, often after dying or through a game. Re:Zero, Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation. More in what is isekai.
Romance and romcomRelationships, awkwardness, confessions. Kaguya-sama: Love Is War, Horimiya, My Dress-Up Darling.
Slow burnRomance that heats up very slowly: dozens of episodes of glances before the first move. Why it's so addictive is covered in what is a slow burn.
Slice of life and iyashikeiQuiet stories about life where nothing terrible happens. Iyashikei means "healing" anime. Laid-Back Camp, Natsume's Book of Friends.
Mystery and psychological thrillerPuzzles, mind games, moral traps. Death Note, Monster, Psycho-Pass.
MechaGiant robots, and almost always the drama of the people inside them. Evangelion, Code Geass.
Mahou shoujoMagical girls. From the bright Sailor Moon to the grim Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
SportsA team, training, the final match. Haikyu!!, Yuri on Ice, Blue Lock.
HorrorFear, curses, monsters. Another, Tokyo Ghoul.
Yaoi and yuriRomance between characters of the same gender: yaoi between men, yuri between women. More in what is yaoi.
Ecchi and hentaiEcchi is flirting and spicy moments, hentai is explicit erotica. Strictly 18+ content.

Many beloved stories now come out not as manga but as Korean webcomics. Read about what makes them different in what is manhwa.
If you'd rather talk than watch
Finished a season and have no one to discuss it with? On my-idol.ru you can talk to anime heroes directly: ask Satoru Gojo what he thinks of the final arc, argue with Kurisu Makise about time travel or help Marin Kitagawa pick her next cosplay. Characters stay in character and remember the conversation. More in AI chat with anime characters.
A plot for your chat
You claim time travel is impossible. Kurisu puts down her screwdriver and offers a bet: in ten minutes she'll prove you wrong, or admit you're right.
