Gentle and vague aren't the same thing

"Oh, I'm so busy right now, let's do it some other time" seems polite. In reality it's a promise you don't plan to keep. They wait for "some other time," text a week later, hear about how busy you are again, and end up more hurt than if they'd heard "no" right away.

  • Vague: "We'll see," "Maybe someday," "Now's not a great time."
  • Clear and gentle: "Thank you, I'm genuinely flattered. But I don't want to go on a date."
  • Vague: "I'll think about it" (and then silence).
  • Clear and gentle: "I thought about it and realized I'm not ready. I don't want to keep you waiting."

You can give a reason, but just one, and keep it short. A list of reasons sounds like an invitation to argue: there's a comeback for each one.

Why silence isn't an option
