A three-step plan

Birthday wishes fall apart when you throw them together the night before: a card with someone else's poem, a gift from the nearest store, a call squeezed in between errands. Start at least a week out, and three steps are all you need.

  1. Think back on what they've said over the past year: what they dreamed about, complained about, kept putting off. There's almost always a gift hiding in there.
  2. Pick one main gesture: a gift, a trip, an evening or a letter. Not everything at once, or none of it will come out right.
  3. Add one sentence in your own words that only you could have written. They'll remember it longer than the gift itself.
